Product goal
Accelerate validation of Planner behavior and enable the iteration of behavior improvements.
Our Motion Planning team's validation strategy pivoted a mere year before we were expected to launch our driverless trucks. The new and more reliable strategy was a data-forward approach, creating an urgent need to manually create thousands of labels of good trajectories to be used for test creation and evaluation.

Design deliverables
In a highly agile environment with a myriad of cross-functional partners across different orgs, we evolved an engineering proof-of-concept labeling tool into a powerhouse tool that scaled our tests from 100 to 125,000.
Alongside the improved labeling tool, we developed net-new workspaces that enabled our autonomy engineers to review results of their newly-created tests, organize their experimental tests, and record their analysis of failures.
We brought a higher standard of product development to a formerly scrappy team through strong feedback loops with our direct internal labelers. We also aligned consistent patterns across autonomy teams beyond Motion Planning with similar workflows and patterns.
